The Social Jar #15 – Is Social Media Getting Boring?

It’s been a pretty crazy 12 months online. From Facebook’s rebrand, Twitter’s controversial changing of CEO, a busy period for Instagram and a whole lot of Metaverse chatter, it’s hard to think of a period that has been more tumultuous for the social media industry than the last year or so.

But despite all this, a recent report from Deloitte found that ‘boredom’ was cited as the main reason behind 42% of users making an effort to quit at least one social media platform in 2021.

The study saw 1,000 consumers in the Republic of Ireland surveyed on the matter, with two in five respondents admitting to attempting a temporary or permanent break from various apps.

So that got us thinking - is social media really getting boring? Which platforms are most at risk of going stale? And what can be done in 2022 to reverse this trend?
